The South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (SWAOC)
In 2022, the Nightingale Hospital built two high-tech orthopaedic theatres with two wards. The surgeons from Exeter, Torbay and Barnstaple hospitals are using SWAOC to perform additional NHS surgeries to reduce the waiting lists for our patients in Devon.
It has been a fantastic sucess so far, with high levels of patient and staff satisfaction. Half of the patients attending for hip or knee repalcement are now being discharged on the same day! It is now routine for patients to only stay in hospital for only one night maximum. This has been possible due to the advances in anaesthetic techniques and pain relief after surgery.
